In 1977, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture was established to enhance the understanding and appreciation of Islamic culture through architecture. Functioning as a search body that recognises examples of architectural excellence, Aga Khan encompassed concerns as varied as contemporary design, social housing, community and development, restoration, re-use and area conservation as well as landscaping and environmental issues.
Organised every three years, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture is also governed by a Steering Committee chaired by His Highness Aga Khan. It is considered to be the largest architectural award in the world, with prizes totalling up to US$ 500,000. Projects are presented and selected by an independent master jury. Over these eight cycles, ninety nine building projects were recognised. This award is a true symbol of achievement.
